Additional Factors that Hinder National Unity:

  1. ETHNICITY AND ETHNIC CONFLICTS Meaning: Excessive emphasis on ethnic identity that leads to conflicts and competition between different ethnic groups.

How it Manifests:

  • Ethnic groups competing for political power
  • Land disputes between farmers and herders
  • Competition for government positions
  • Conflicts over natural resources
  • Struggle for traditional rulership

Examples in Nigeria:

  • Farmer-herder conflicts in Middle Belt states
  • Competition between ethnic groups for local government creation
  • Disputes over oil revenues in Niger Delta
  • Conflicts over traditional stools and chieftaincy
  • Political parties based on ethnic lines

  • Kanuri: Mainly in Borno, Yobe

  • Berom: Plateau State

MIDDLE BELT:

  • Yoruba: Parts of Kwara and Kogi
  • Igala: Kogi State
  • Idoma: Benue State
  • Jukun: Taraba State

SOUTHERN NIGERIA:

  • Yoruba: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti
