Topic: Extended Family Members In Child Development

EXTENDED FAMILY

This is a family group made up of parents, children, and other close relatives living in a single household as a family unity.They include the paternal relatives(from the father’s lineage) and maternal relatives(from the mother’s lineage)

 ROLES OF EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT

  • They act as an agent of socialization
  • They assist in transmitting cultural norms and traditions
  • They teach the child how to relate to elders, good and acceptable morals,
  • religious beliefs, mother language, ways of greeting and interactions with
  • other people and performing chores.
  • They build a support structure in life-guidance, behaviour, finance and
  • emotional needs of the child
  • They instill positive discipline on the child
  • They give the child a sense of belonging and importance
