Topic: Fractions and Decimals

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

Adding Fractions with Same Denominators

Rule: Add the numerators, keep the denominator

Example: 3/7 + 2/7 = (3+2)/7 = 5/7

Adding Fractions with Different Denominators

Steps:

  1. Find the L.C.M of denominators
  2. Convert to equivalent fractions
  3. Add numerators
  4. Simplify if possible

Example: 1/3 + 1/4

L.C.M of 3 and 4 = 12

1/3 = 4/12

1/4 = 3/12

4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Subtracting Fractions

Same method as addition, but subtract numerators

Example: 5/6 – 1/4

L.C.M of 6 and 4 = 12

5/6 = 10/12

1/4 = 3/12

10/12 – 3/12 = 7/12

Exercise A – Addition of Fractions

Solve these problems:

  1. 2/5 + 1/5 = ______
  2. 3/8 + 1/4 = ______
  3. 1/3 + 1/6 = ______
  4. 2/7 + 3/14 = ______
  5. 5/12 + 1/4 + 1/3 = ______

Exercise B – Subtraction of Fractions

Solve these problems:

  1. 4/5 – 1/5 = ______
  2. 3/4 – 1/3 = ______
  3. 5/6 – 1/2 = ______
  4. 7/8 – 1/4 = ______
  5. 11/12 – 1/3 = ______

Multiplication and Division of Fractions

Multiplying Fractions

Rule: Multiply numerators together, multiply denominators together

Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2

Multiplying by Whole Numbers

Example: 3/5 × 4 = (3×4)/5 = 12/5 = 2 2/5

Dividing Fractions

Rule: Multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction)

Example: 2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9

Mixed Numbers

Convert to improper fractions first

Example: 2 1/3 × 1 1/4

2 1/3 = 7/3

1 1/4 = 5/4

7/3 × 5/4 = 35/12 = 2 11/12

Exercise C – Multiplication of Fractions

Solve these problems:

  1. 1/2 × 1/3 = ______
  2. 2/5 × 3/4 = ______
  3. 3/8 × 4 = ______
  4. 1 1/2 × 2/3 = ______
  5. 2 1/4 × 1 1/3 = ______

Exercise D – Division of Fractions

Solve these problems:

  1. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = ______
  2. 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = ______
  3. 2/3 ÷ 4 = ______
  4. 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = ______
  5. 2 2/5 ÷ 1 1/5 = ______
