LEARNING OBJECTIVES

LESSON DEVELOPMENT
INTRODUCTION (5 minutes)

PRESENTATION (15 minutes)
Step 1: What is Drug Abuse?
- Explain that drugs can be medicine that helps us when we’re sick
- Define drug abuse as using drugs in the wrong way or using illegal drugs
- Give simple examples: Taking too much cough syrup, using someone else’s medicine
Step 2: Types of Commonly Abused Substances Present age-appropriate examples:
- Alcohol (beer, wine)
- Cigarettes and tobacco
- Cough syrups (when misused)
- Glue and petrol (inhaling)
- Hard drugs (cocaine, heroin) – mention briefly as very dangerous
Step 3: Dangers of Drug Abuse Explain the harmful effects:
- Makes people very sick
- Damages the brain and body
- Can cause people to do dangerous things
- Leads to poor performance in school
- Can cause death
- Makes families sad and worried
Step 4: Prevention Methods Teach pupils how to say “NO”:
- Stay away from people who use drugs
- Tell a trusted adult if someone offers you drugs
- Focus on studies and good activities
- Choose good friends
- Remember that drugs are not solutions to problems
