Topic: More Parts Of The CPU
More Parts of the CPU
In our last class, we learned about the Control Unit. Today we learn about other important parts inside the CPU.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
- Does all math calculations (addition, subtraction)
- Performs logical operations (comparing numbers)
- Like a calculator inside the computer
- Works very fast – millions of calculations per second
- Helps solve problems that need math
Logic Unit
- Makes decisions for the computer
- Compares things to see which is bigger or smaller
- Checks if things are true or false
- Like asking questions: “Is 5 bigger than 3?”
- Helps computer make choices
Storage Unit
- Stores information the computer is working on
- Keeps data temporarily while CPU works
- Like a notebook where you write things down
- Has different types:
- Registers – very fast, small storage
- Cache – medium speed storage
- Helps CPU remember what it’s doing
Exercise 2: Match the CPU parts:
- Does math calculations: _______
- Makes decisions: _______
- Stores information temporarily: _______
- Controls other parts: _______ (from yesterday)
CLASS ACTIVITIES
Water Purification Experiment
If possible, demonstrate with muddy water:
- Show dirty water in a clear container
- Let students observe what they see
- Filter through cloth or sand
- Discuss what happened
Exercise 3: Water Safety Quiz
- Name 2 ways to purify water at home: _______, _______
- What happens if we don’t purify dirty water? _______
- Which is faster – boiling or filtering? _______
CPU Memory Game
Exercise 4: CPU Parts Action!
- ALU: Pretend to use a calculator
- Logic Unit: Point to the bigger of two objects
- Storage Unit: Pretend to write in a notebook
- Control Unit: Give commands to your classmates
HOMEWORK
- Ask your parents how they purify water at home
- Practice the 5 steps of boiling water (ask an adult to help)
- Name one thing each CPU part does:
- ALU: _______
- Logic Unit: _______
- Storage Unit: _______
