More Parts of the CPU

In our last class, we learned about the Control Unit. Today we learn about other important parts inside the CPU.

Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)

• Does all math calculations (addition, subtraction)
• Performs logical operations (comparing numbers)
• Like a calculator inside the computer
• Works very fast – millions of calculations per second
• Helps solve problems that need math

Logic Unit

• Makes decisions for the computer
• Compares things to see which is bigger or smaller
• Checks if things are true or false
• Like asking questions: “Is 5 bigger than 3?”
• Helps computer make choices

Storage Unit

• Stores information the computer is working on
• Keeps data temporarily while CPU works
• Like a notebook where you write things down
• Has different types:
  1. Registers – very fast, small storage
  2. Cache – medium speed storage
• Helps CPU remember what it’s doing
