C. FRACTIONS

What is a fraction? A fraction shows part of a whole thing.

Parts of a fraction:

  • Numerator (top number) = parts we have
  • Denominator (bottom number) = total number of parts

Example: 1/2 means 1 part out of 2 equal parts

Common fractions:

  • 1/2 = one half
  • 1/3 = one third
  • 1/4 = one quarter
  • 2/3 = two thirds
  • 3/4 = three quarters

 

D. FRACTIONS OF SHAPES

Fractions of squares: □ → Half of square = 1/2 ■□ (shaded part = 1/2)

Fractions of rectangles: ▬ → One quarter = 1/4 ■□□□ (shaded part = 1/4)

Fractions of triangles: △ → Half of triangle = 1/2 ■△ (shaded part = 1/2)

Fractions of circles: ○ → One third = 1/3 ●○○ (shaded part = 1/3)

E. FRACTIONS OF NUMBERS

Finding fractions of numbers:

1/2 of a number: 1/2 of 8 = 8 ÷ 2 = 4

1/3 of a number: 1/3 of 9 = 9 ÷ 3 = 3

1/4 of a number: 1/4 of 12 = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
