Topic: Structure: Main Clause Modal ‘If’
What are Conditional Sentences with ‘If’?
These sentences show cause and effect. They have two parts: the ‘if’ clause (condition) and the main clause (result).
Structure:
If + present tense, + will/shall + base verb
Examples:
- If I am lazy, my mother will be angry.
- If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
- If it rains, we will stay indoors.
- If she comes early, we will start the meeting.
Modal Verbs in Main Clause:
- will (certainty): If you work hard, you will succeed.
- can (ability): If you practice, you can improve.
- may (possibility): If we hurry, we may catch the bus.
- should (advice): If you feel sick, you should see a doctor.
- must (necessity): If it rains, we must take umbrellas.
Exercise D – Complete the Conditional Sentences
Fill in the correct modal verb:
- If I finish my homework early, I _______ watch television.
- If you don’t study, you _______ fail the test.
- If we leave now, we _______ arrive on time.
- If the weather is good, we _______ go for a picnic.
- If you eat too much, you _______ feel sick.
