Topic: Structure: Further Practice on Comparison of Adverbs
Review: Degrees of Comparison
Adverbs, like adjectives, have three degrees: positive, comparative, and superlative.
Formation Rules:
- Short Adverbs (add -er, -est):
- fast → faster → fastest
- hard → harder → hardest
- early → earlier → earliest
- Long Adverbs (use more, most):
- carefully → more carefully → most carefully
- beautifully → more beautifully → most beautifully
- quickly → more quickly → most quickly
- Irregular Adverbs:
- well → better → best
- badly → worse → worst
- little → less → least
- much → more → most
Examples in Sentences:
- Positive: She runs fast.
- Comparative: She runs faster than her sister.
- Superlative: She runs fastest in the class.
- Positive: He works carefully.
- Comparative: He works more carefully than before.
- Superlative: He works most carefully of all students.

Circle the correct adverb:
- Of all the students, Mary writes (more neatly / most neatly).
- John runs (faster / more fast) than Peter.
- She speaks English (better / more better) than her brother.
- The baby sleeps (more peacefully / most peacefully) at night than during the day.
- Among the three singers, Kemi performs (better / best).
Exercise G – Complete the Sentences
Use the correct form of the adverb in brackets:
- Please speak _______ (clearly) than yesterday.
- Of all the players, Tunde plays _______ (well).
- She arrived _______ (early) than expected.
- This machine works _______ (efficiently) than the old one.
- Among all the dancers, Bisi performs _______ (gracefully).
Exercise H – Make Comparisons
Write sentences comparing these people/things:
- Three runners: Ade (fast), Bola (faster), Chidi (fastest)
- Two singers: Kemi (beautifully), Tope (more beautifully)
- Three students: John (well), Mary (better), David (best)
