First Rightly Guided Caliph
Life History
Before Islam
- Real name: Abdullah ibn Uthman
- Known as: Abu Bakr (Father of the young camel)
- Born in: Makkah
- Job: Rich merchant and businessman
- Character: Kind, honest, and trustworthy
With Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
- First man to believe in Islam
- Best friend of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
- Gave lots of money to help Islam
- Went with the Prophet during Hijra (migration to Madinah)
- Always supported the Prophet in difficult times
Becoming Caliph (Leader)
How He Became Caliph:
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) died in 632 CE
- Muslims chose Abu Bakr as their first Caliph
- He was 63 years old
- Ruled for 2 years and 3 months (632-634 CE)
Major Achievements as Caliph
- Kept Muslims United
- Some tribes wanted to leave Islam
- Abu Bakr fought the Riddah Wars to keep them together
- Made sure all Muslims followed one leader
- Collected the Quran
- Many people who memorized Quran died in wars
- Abu Bakr ordered to write down the whole Quran in one book
- This saved the Quran for all future Muslims
- Spread Islam
- Sent Muslim armies to Iraq and Syria
- Many new people became Muslims
- Islam started spreading to new lands
- Fair Leadership
- Treated rich and poor the same way
- Gave his own money to help poor people
- Always asked other Muslims for advice
