First Rightly Guided Caliph

Life History

Before Islam

  • Real name: Abdullah ibn Uthman
  • Known as: Abu Bakr (Father of the young camel)
  • Born in: Makkah
  • Job: Rich merchant and businessman
  • Character: Kind, honest, and trustworthy

With Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

  • First man to believe in Islam
  • Best friend of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
  • Gave lots of money to help Islam
  • Went with the Prophet during Hijra (migration to Madinah)
  • Always supported the Prophet in difficult times

 

Becoming Caliph (Leader)

How He Became Caliph:

  • Prophet Muhammad (SAW) died in 632 CE
  • Muslims chose Abu Bakr as their first Caliph
  • He was 63 years old
  • Ruled for 2 years and 3 months (632-634 CE)

 

Major Achievements as Caliph

  1. Kept Muslims United
  • Some tribes wanted to leave Islam
  • Abu Bakr fought the Riddah Wars to keep them together
  • Made sure all Muslims followed one leader
  1. Collected the Quran
  • Many people who memorized Quran died in wars
  • Abu Bakr ordered to write down the whole Quran in one book
  • This saved the Quran for all future Muslims
  1. Spread Islam
  • Sent Muslim armies to Iraq and Syria
  • Many new people became Muslims
  • Islam started spreading to new lands
  1. Fair Leadership
  • Treated rich and poor the same way
  • Gave his own money to help poor people
  • Always asked other Muslims for advice

Why Muslims loved him:

  • Very humble – lived simply
  • Always truthful (called As-Siddiq – The Truthful)
  • Generous with his money
  • Brave in difficult times
  • Kind to everyone
