Topic: Building Construction I – Building Components
Identification of Parts of a Building
- Foundation: The base of the building that supports the entire structure. It is usually made of concrete; it distributes the load of the building to the soil.
- Footings: Structural elements that support the foundation and distribute the building’s load to the soil.
- Columns: Vertical members that support the floors and transfer loads to the foundation. It can be made of various materials, such as concrete, steel, or wood.
- Beams: Horizontal members that support the structure’s load and distribute it to the columns. It can be made of materials like concrete, steel, or wood.
- Walls: Vertical barriers that enclose and define the building’s perimeter. It can be load-bearing or non-load-bearing.
- Roof: The uppermost covering of a building, protecting from weather elements. There are various types including pitched roofs, flat roofs, or domes.
- Floors: Horizontal surfaces within the building that provide spaces for living, working, or other activities. It is constructed with materials like concrete, wood, or steel.
- Ceilings: The overhead surface of a room, providing a finish to the upper limit of a space.
- Doors: Entry and exit points to rooms or the building itself. It can be made of wood, metal, glass, or other materials.
- Windows: Openings in walls designed to allow light and ventilation. It’s vary in size, shape, and materials.
- Stairs: A structure consisting of steps for ascending or descending between floors.
- Roof Trusses: Framework of beams forming the roof structure, providing support and stability.
