Topic: Classification Of Non-Living Things – Metals & Non Metals
CLASSIFICATION OF NON-LIVING THINGS INTO METALS AND NON-METALS
METALS
Metals are elements that readily form positive ions and have metallic bonds. Examples are copper, iron, copper, etc.
Properties of Metals
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are good conductors of heat and electricity
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are lustrous i.e. shiny and can be polished.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are malleable, that is, they are capable of being beaten into thin sheets.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are ductile, that is, they can be drawn into thin wire.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are generally strong and hard with high tensile strength
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are sonorous, that is, they produce sound when struck.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They have high densities.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They have high melting and boiling points
NON-METALS
These are elements that do not have the properties of metals. Examples are sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, and chlorine. Etc.
Properties of Non-metals
- Â Â Â They are poor conductors of heat and electricity
- Â Â They are not lustrous
- Â Â They are not malleable
- Â Â They are not ductile
- Â Â They are not sonorous
- Â Â They have low melting and boiling point
- Â Â They have low densities
Â
Differences between metals and nonmetals
| Metals | Non-metals |
| They are hard | They are generally soft except for diamond |
| They are malleable | They are not malleable |
| They are lustrous | They are not lustrous |
| They are ductile | They are not ductile |
| They have high-density | They have low density |
| They are good conductors of heat and electricity | They are poor conductors of heat and electricity |
| They have a high melting point | They have a low melting point |
| They can rust | They do not rust |
Â
Uses of Metals
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are used for building houses, bridges, and water tanks
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are used for manufacturing vehicles and airplanes
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are used for making looking utensils such as pots, kettles, etc.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In making cutleries like spoons, knives, forks
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â For making trophies and jewelry
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â They are used in automobile and building construction
Uses of Non-metals
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Wood or rubber can be used for making tool handles
- Â Â Â Â Â Â They are used as insulators for most electrical appliances
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Wood can be used to make furniture
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Wood is used in the construction of boats and canoes
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Used in roofing buildings
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Plastics can be used in making containers
CLASSWORK
