What is Incident Reporting?
Incident reporting means telling others about something that happened. When reporting incidents, we must:
- Speak clearly and calmly
- Give facts, not opinions
- Use proper intonation
- Include important details
Useful Phrases for Reporting:
- “I saw what happened…”
- “According to witnesses…”
- “The incident occurred at…”
- “First, I noticed that…”
- “Then, suddenly…”
- “As a result…”
Intonation for Reporting:
- Serious tone – falling intonation for facts ↘
- Concerned tone – slight rise for questions ↗
- Clear pronunciation – stress important words
Exercise A – Reporting Practice
Read these incident reports with proper intonation:
- “I witnessed a car accident on Lagos-Ibadan expressway yesterday.” ↘
- “The fire started in the kitchen around 3 o’clock.” ↘
- “Did anyone see who broke the window?” ↗
- “According to the security guard, three boys ran away.” ↘
- “The teacher immediately called for help.” ↘
Practice Activity: Work in groups of three. One person describes an incident, another asks questions, and the third person reports what they heard.
