What is Recreation?
Definition: Recreation refers to activities done for enjoyment, relaxation, and pleasure during leisure time. It involves refreshing one’s mind and body through activities that are fun and rejuvenating.
Origin of Word:
- From Latin “recreatio” meaning “restoration” or “recovery”
- “Re-create” = to create again, refresh, restore
Purpose of Recreation:
- Refresh mind and body
- Relieve stress
- Provide enjoyment and fun
- Develop skills and talents
- Build relationships
- Improve health and fitness
- Balance work/study with leisure
Characteristics of Recreation:
- Voluntary – Done by choice, not forced
- Enjoyable – Provides pleasure and satisfaction
- Leisure time – Done during free time
- Constructive – Beneficial to participant
- Flexible – Can be adapted to interests

Two Components of Recreation
Recreation is divided into two main categories based on location:
