Content

History of Hockey

 

Field Hockey:

  • One of the oldest team sports (over 4,000 years)
  • Modern game developed in England in the 19th century
  • First Hockey Association formed in 1886 in England
  • Became an Olympic sport in 1908 (men), 1980 (women)
  • Popular in India, Pakistan, Netherlands, Australia

Ice Hockey:

  • Originated in Canada in the 19th century
  • First indoor game played in Montreal, 1875
  • National Hockey League (NHL) founded in 1917

Facilities and Equipment

Playing Field (Field Hockey):

  • Length: 91.4 meters (100 yards)
  • Width: 55 meters (60 yards)
  • Rectangular shape
  • Goal posts: 3.66m wide × 2.14m high
  • Surface: Grass or artificial turf
  • Marked with lines for striking circles, center line, sidelines
