A. STRUCTURE: USE OF AUXILIARY VERBS

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Define auxiliary verbs
  • Identify auxiliary verbs in sentences
  • Use auxiliary verbs correctly in speech and writing

Introduction:

Good morning class! Today we will learn about special helping verbs called auxiliary verbs. These verbs help other verbs to express different meanings.

Lesson Content:

What are Auxiliary Verbs?

  • Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs
  • They work together with main verbs
  • They help to show time, possibility, or necessity
  • Common auxiliary verbs: is, am, are, was, were, have, has, had, will, shall, can, could, may, might, must, should, would

Types of Auxiliary Verbs:

  1. Primary Auxiliaries:
  • BE verbs: am, is, are, was, were
  • HAVE verbs: have, has, had
  • DO verbs: do, does, did
  1. Modal Auxiliaries:
  • can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must

Examples of Auxiliary Verbs in Use:

With BE verbs:

  • I am reading a book
  • She is singing beautifully
  • They are playing football
  • He was sleeping yesterday
  • We were studying together

With HAVE verbs:

  • I have finished my homework
  • She has eaten her lunch
  • They had gone home early

With DO verbs:

  • Do you like ice cream?
  • Does he play tennis?
  • Did they come to school?

With Modal verbs:

  • I can swim very well
  • You should study hard
  • We must obey our parents
  • May I go to the toilet?

Class Activity:

Students identify auxiliary verbs in given sentences and explain their function.

Evaluation Questions:

  2. Name three BE verbs
  3. Complete: “She _____ reading a story” (is/are)
  4. Which auxiliary verb shows ability?
  5. Make a sentence using “have”

Assignment:

Write five sentences using different auxiliary verbs. Underline the auxiliary verb in each sentence.
