Plants Exhibiting Characteristics of Living Things

Growth:

  • Bean plants grow from tiny seeds into tall plants

  • Tree rings show how trees grow bigger each year
  • Grass grows taller after being cut

  • Flower buds open into full flowers

Movement:

  • Sunflower heads turn to face the sun all day

  • Touch-me-not plant folds leaves when touched

  • Plant stems bend toward light from windows

  • Roots grow down into soil to find water

Feeding:

  • Green leaves make food using sunlight and air
  • Roots suck up water and nutrients from soil
  • Cactus plants store food and water in thick stems
  • Some plants like Venus flytrap catch and eat insects

Breathing:

  • Plants take in carbon dioxide from air
  • Plants give out oxygen through their leaves
  • This happens through tiny holes called stomata
  • Plants breathe day and night

Reproduction:

  • Mango trees make fruits with seeds inside
  • Maize plants produce corn with many seeds
  • Potato plants grow new potatoes underground
  • Flowers attract bees to help make seeds
