Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

Lesson Content:
What is Tolerance? Tolerance is the ability to accept, respect, and peacefully coexist with people who have different beliefs, opinions, cultures, religions, or ways of life from your own. It means being patient and understanding with others, even when you disagree with them.

Why Tolerance is Important:
- Promotes peace in diverse societies
- Reduces conflicts and violence
- Builds understanding between different groups
- Encourages learning from others
- Creates harmonious communities
Characteristics of Tolerance:
- ACCEPTANCE OF DIFFERENCES Meaning: Recognizing and accepting that people are different and that’s normal and good.
Examples:
- Accepting classmates from different tribes
- Respecting friends who practice different religions
- Understanding that families have different customs
- Appreciating different languages spoken in Nigeria
- Welcoming new students from other states
How to Demonstrate:
- Don’t mock people for being different
- Ask questions to learn about other cultures
- Participate in diverse cultural activities
- Defend others when they’re discriminated against
- Celebrate diversity in your community
- PATIENCE WITH OTHERS Meaning: Being calm and understanding when others act differently or make mistakes.
Examples:
- Waiting patiently when someone speaks slowly
- Not getting angry when friends have different opinions
- Being patient with elderly people who move slowly
- Understanding when someone doesn’t speak English well
- Helping slow learners without frustration
How to Demonstrate:
- Take deep breaths when feeling impatient
- Listen carefully to others’ explanations
- Give people time to express themselves
- Don’t rush others to change their minds
- Show kindness to people who struggle
- RESPECT FOR OTHERS’ RIGHTS Meaning: Acknowledging that everyone has the right to their beliefs and practices.
Examples:
- Respecting others’ right to worship differently
- Allowing friends to have different political views
- Accepting others’ choice of food and clothing
- Respecting different ways of greeting
- Understanding various family traditions
How to Demonstrate:
- Don’t force your beliefs on others
- Protect others’ freedom to be different
- Speak up against discrimination
- Support equal treatment for everyone
- Value others’ opinions even when different
- PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE Meaning: Living together harmoniously despite differences.
Examples:
- Christians and Muslims playing together
- Different tribes working in the same office
- Various ethnic groups in the same neighborhood
- Students from different states in one class
- Families with different customs being friends
How to Demonstrate:
- Participate in inter-religious activities
- Make friends across tribal lines
- Join diverse groups and clubs
- Promote unity in diversity
- Resolve conflicts peacefully
- OPEN-MINDEDNESS Meaning: Being willing to listen to and consider different ideas and viewpoints.
Examples:
- Listening to different solutions to problems
- Trying foods from other cultures
- Learning about other people’s traditions
- Considering different ways of doing things
- Being curious about other perspectives
How to Demonstrate:
- Ask questions to understand others better
- Read about different cultures and religions
- Attend cultural festivals and events
- Travel to other parts of Nigeria
- Make friends with diverse people
