  • State differences between acids and bases

What are Acids and Bases?

Acids are substances that taste sour and can corrode metals. They turn blue litmus paper red.

Bases are substances that taste bitter and feel slippery. They turn red litmus paper blue.

Examples of Acids:

  • Lemon juice (citric acid)
  • Vinegar (acetic acid)
  • Orange juice
  • Battery acid

Examples of Bases:

  • Soap
  • Baking soda

  • Toothpaste
  • Antacid tablets

Types of Acids and Bases:

Strong Acids: Battery acid, stomach acid Weak Acids: Lemon juice, vinegar Strong Bases: Caustic soda, bleach Weak Bases: Baking soda, soap

Differences between Acids and Bases:

Acids Bases
Taste sour Taste bitter
Turn blue litmus red Turn red litmus blue
