C. ORDERING OF WHOLE NUMBERS

Arranging from smallest to biggest: Example: 648, 642, 655, 641, 650 Answer: 641, 642, 648, 650, 655

Arranging from biggest to smallest: Example: 647, 653, 641, 659, 645 Answer: 659, 653, 647, 645, 641

Practice ordering:

  1. Arrange from smallest to biggest: 656, 641, 649, 654, 643 Answer: _______
  2. Arrange from biggest to smallest: 658, 645, 660, 642, 651 Answer: _______

D. THE USE OF SYMBOLS >, < AND =

Understanding the symbols:

  • > means “greater than” (bigger than)
  • < means “less than” (smaller than)
  • = means “equal to” (same as)

Remember: The open mouth points to the bigger number!

Examples:

  • 650 > 645 (650 is greater than 645)
  • 642 < 648 (642 is less than 648)
  • 655 = 655 (655 is equal to 655)

Practice with symbols:

  1. 651 _____ 647 (>, <, =)
  2. 640 _____ 660 (>, <, =)
  3. 649 _____ 649 (>, <, =)
  4. 658 _____ 652 (>, <, =)
  5. 644 _____ 654 (>, <, =)

E. VALUE OF NUMBERS

Place value in ordering: When comparing numbers:

  • First, compare hundreds place
  • Then, compare tens place
  • Finally, compare units place

Example: Compare 648 and 652

  • Hundreds: 6 = 6 (same)
  • Tens: 4 < 5 (4 is less than 5)
  • So 648 < 652

Practice comparing:

  • 641 and 649: _____
  • 655 and 650: _____
  • 647 and 647: _____

F. QUANTITATIVE REASONING

Number patterns:

  2. 660, 658, 656, _____, _____
  3. 650, 652, 654, _____, _____
