Topic: Addition Of Two 2-Digit Numbers

Learning Objectives

By the end of this week, pupils should be able to:

  • Count and identify numbers from 1-470 (focus on 450-470)
  • Write numbers 450-470 and 1-470 in numerals and words
  • Add two 2-digit numbers without exchanging or renaming
  • Relate addition to real-life experiences (shopping, etc.)
  • Solve real-life problems involving 2-digit addition
  • Express numbers in expanded form (e.g., 96 = 9 tens + 6 units)

Lesson Content

Day 1: Counting to 470

New Number Range:

  • Practice counting from 1-470
  • Focus on numbers 450-470: 450, 451, 452… 470
  • Learn to read: “four hundred and fifty-one”
  • Write these numbers clearly and neatly

Number Formation:

  • Practice writing 450, 455, 460, 465, 470
  • Emphasize correct number formation
  • Both numerals and words practice

Day 2: Expanded Form

What is Expanded Form? Breaking down numbers to show place values clearly.

Examples:

  • 56 = 5 tens + 6 units = 50 + 6
  • 73 = 7 tens + 3 units = 70 + 3
  • 89 = 8 tens + 9 units = 80 + 9

Building Numbers:

  • 4 tens + 7 units = 47
  • 6 tens + 2 units = 62
  • 9 tens + 5 units = 95

Day 3-4: Adding 2-Digit Numbers (No Exchanging)

What Does “No Exchanging” Mean?

  • The sum of units column is 9 or less
  • The sum of tens column is 9 or less
  • No carrying over needed

Step-by-Step Method:

  1. Write numbers in columns (tens and units)
  2. Add the units column first
  3. Add the tens column next
  4. Write your answer

Example 1: 23 + 45

  T  U

   2  3

 + 4  5

 ——

   6  8

  • Units: 3 + 5 = 8
  • Tens: 2 + 4 = 6
  • Answer: 68

Example 2: 34 + 52

  T  U

   3  4

 + 5  2

 ——

   8  6

  • Units: 4 + 2 = 6
  • Tens: 3 + 5 = 8
  • Answer: 86

Day 5: Real-Life Applications

Shopping Examples: “At the market, Mom bought items worth 35 naira and 42 naira. How much did she spend altogether?” 35 + 42 = 77 naira

School Examples: “In the morning, 23 pupils came to school. In the afternoon, 34 more pupils came. How many pupils came to school that day?” 23 + 34 = 57 pupils

Examples in Class

Expanded Form Examples:

  • 67 = 6 tens + 7 units = 60 + 7
  • 84 = 8 tens + 4 units = 80 + 4
  • 59 = 5 tens + 9 units = 50 + 9

Addition Examples:

Example 1:

  45

 + 32

 —-

   77

Example 2:

  26

 + 53

 —-

   79

Real-Life Examples:

Fruit Seller: “A fruit seller sold 45 oranges in the morning and 34 oranges in the evening. How many oranges did he sell altogether?” 45 + 34 = 79 oranges

Classroom Supplies: “Class A has 38 books and Class B has 41 books. How many books do both classes have together?” 38 + 41 = 79 books

Exercises

Exercise 1: Number Practice

Write these numbers:

  1. Four hundred and fifty-three = ___
  2. Four hundred and sixty-seven = ___
  3. 458 in words = ___
  4. 465 in words = ___

Count and fill the missing numbers: 5. 465, 466, ___, 468, ___, 470

Exercise 2: Expanded Form

Write in expanded form:

  1. 57 = ___ tens + ___ units = ___ + ___
  2. 84 = ___ tens + ___ units = ___ + ___
  3. 69 = ___ tens + ___ units = ___ + ___
  4. 73 = ___ tens + ___ units = ___ + ___

Build these numbers: 5. 6 tens + 8 units = ___ 6. 5 tens + 4 units = ___ 7. 7 tens + 9 units = ___

Exercise 3: Addition Without Exchanging

Solve these addition problems:

  1. 34 2. 25 3. 46 4. 53
