How Words Create Meaning
Single Words vs. Combined Words:
- Single word: “Run” (by itself doesn’t tell us much)
- Combined words: “The boy runs quickly to school” (gives us complete meaning)
When we combine words, we create:
- Complete thoughts
- Clear pictures in our minds
- Better understanding
- Interesting sentences
New Vocabulary Words for Week 3
Set 1: Action Words (Verbs)
- EXPLORE
- Meaning: To go around and discover new places or things
- Example: The children explore the forest to find interesting plants.
- Use in sentence: I like to explore my grandmother’s garden.
- DISCOVER
- Meaning: To find something new or learn something for the first time
- Example: Scientists discover new animals in the ocean.
- Use in sentence: Maria discovered a beautiful shell on the beach.
- ACCOMPLISH
- Meaning: To complete or finish something successfully
- Example: Tom accomplished his goal of reading ten books.
- Use in sentence: I want to accomplish all my homework before dinner.
- EXAMINE
- Meaning: To look at something very carefully
- Example: The doctor examined the patient’s sore throat.
- Use in sentence: We examined the insect under a magnifying glass.
- COMMUNICATE
- Meaning: To share information or feelings with others
- Example: People communicate through speaking, writing, and gestures.
- Use in sentence: I communicate with my grandmother through letters.
Set 2: Describing Words (Adjectives)
- MAGNIFICENT
- Meaning: Very beautiful, impressive, or wonderful
- Example: The magnificent sunset painted the sky orange and pink.
- Use in sentence: The magnificent elephant was the biggest animal in the zoo.
- CURIOUS
- Meaning: Wanting to know more about something
- Example: The curious cat investigated every corner of the house.
- Use in sentence: I am curious about how airplanes can fly.
- DELIGHTFUL
- Meaning: Very pleasant and enjoyable
- Example: We had a delightful picnic in the park.
- Use in sentence: The delightful music made everyone want to dance.
- TREMENDOUS
- Meaning: Very large, great, or impressive
- Example: The tremendous tree was over 100 years old.
- Use in sentence: She made a tremendous effort to help her friend.
- PRECIOUS
- Meaning: Very valuable or much loved
- Example: The precious diamond sparkled in the sunlight.
- Use in sentence: My grandmother’s necklace is very precious to me.
Set 3: Feeling Words (Emotions)
- ENTHUSIASTIC
- Meaning: Very excited and interested
- Example: The enthusiastic students raised their hands to answer questions.
- Use in sentence: I am enthusiastic about learning to play the piano.
- CONFIDENT
- Meaning: Sure of yourself and your abilities
- Example: The confident speaker talked clearly to the large audience.
- Use in sentence: I feel confident that I can solve this math problem.
- GRATEFUL
- Meaning: Thankful and appreciative
- Example: She was grateful for all the help her friends gave her.
- Use in sentence: I am grateful for my teacher’s patience.
- DETERMINED
- Meaning: Having made a firm decision to do something
- Example: The determined runner finished the race despite being tired.
- Use in sentence: I am determined to learn how to ride a bicycle.
- CONTENT
- Meaning: Happy and satisfied
- Example: The content baby slept peacefully in her mother’s arms.
- Use in sentence: I feel content when I’m reading a good book.
Word Combination Activities
Activity 1: Building Descriptive Phrases Combine a describing word with a thing word:
- magnificent + castle = magnificent castle
- curious + monkey = curious monkey
- precious + jewel = precious jewel
- delightful + song = delightful song
Activity 2: Creating Action Phrases Combine an action word with other words:
- explore + the cave = explore the cave
- discover + a treasure = discover a treasure
- accomplish + the task = accomplish the task
- examine + the evidence = examine the evidence
Activity 3: Making Complete Sentences Combine different types of words to make complete thoughts:
- Subject + Action + Object: “The curious child explored the garden.”
- Subject + Action + Description: “She accomplished the tremendous task.”
- Subject + Feeling + Reason: “He was grateful for the delightful surprise.”
Using Context to Understand Meaning
Strategy 1: Look for Clue Words “The magnificent castle stood tall on the hill, with its beautiful towers reaching toward the sky.”
- Clue words: “beautiful towers,” “reaching toward sky”
- magnificent means very beautiful and impressive
Strategy 2: Use Picture Clues If you see a picture of someone looking closely at something with a magnifying glass, the word “examine” makes sense.
Strategy 3: Use Opposite Words “Unlike his shy sister, Tom was very confident when speaking to the class.”
- “Unlike” tells us confident is the opposite of shy
- confident means sure of yourself
Strategy 4: Use Examples “Animals communicate in many ways: dogs bark, cats meow, and birds sing.”
- Examples: bark, meow, sing
- communicate means to share information

Family 1: Discovery Words
- explore, discover, examine, investigate, search, find
Family 2: Feeling Words
- enthusiastic, excited, thrilled, eager, interested
Family 3: Size Words
- magnificent, tremendous, enormous, gigantic, huge, tiny
Family 4: Good Words
- delightful, wonderful, pleasant, enjoyable, lovely
Family 5: Important Words
- precious, valuable, special, treasured, important
