What is Food?

Types of Food

  1. Fruits
  • Oranges, apples, bananas, mangoes
  1. Vegetables

  • Tomatoes, carrots, spinach, cabbage
  1. Protein Foods

  • Meat, fish, eggs, beans
  1. Carbohydrates
  • Rice, bread, yam, potatoes
  1. Drinks
  • Water, milk, juice

What is Contaminated Food?

  • Contaminated food is dirty food
  • Food that is not safe to eat
  • Food that can make us sick
  • Food that is spoiled or bad

Types of Contaminated Food

  1. Expired Food
  • Food that is too old
  • The date on the can or pack has passed
  • It is no longer good to eat
  1. Food Not Prepared Hygienically
  • Food prepared with dirty hands
  • Food prepared in a dirty place
  • Food with flies on it
  • Food cooked with dirty water
  1. Uncovered Food
  • Food left open
  • Flies and insects sit on it
  • Dust falls on it
  • It becomes dirty
  1. Food on the Floor
  • Food that fell on the ground
  • Food that touched dirty surfaces
  • Has germs on it
  1. Rotten Food
  • Food that smells bad
  • Food that looks bad
  • Food with mold (green or black spots)
  • Food that is spoiled

Dangers of Eating Contaminated Food

What happens when you eat bad food:

  • Stomach ache – Your tummy hurts
  • Vomiting – You throw up
  • Diarrhea – Running stomach
  • Fever – Your body becomes hot
  • Sickness – You become very ill
  • Poisoning – Very serious illness

How to Identify Contaminated Food

Look for these signs:

  1. Check the Date
  • Look at the expiry date
  • If it has passed, don’t eat it
  1. Smell the Food
  • If it smells bad, don’t eat it
  • Good food smells nice
  1. Look at the Food
  • If it has mold, don’t eat it
  • If the color changed, don’t eat it
  • If it looks slimy, don’t eat it
  1. Check the Packaging
  • If the can is swollen, don’t eat it
  • If the pack is torn, don’t eat it

How to Stay Safe

  1. Wash Your Hands
  • Before eating
  • After using the toilet
  • Use soap and water
  1. Eat Fresh Food
  • Eat food that is newly cooked
  • Don’t eat old food
  1. Drink Clean Water
  • Drink boiled or filtered water
  • Don’t drink dirty water
  1. Keep Food Covered
  • Cover food to keep flies away
  • Store food properly
  1. Don’t Eat Street Food (Sometimes)
  • Some street food is not clean
  • Ask your parents first
  1. Wash Fruits and Vegetables
  • Wash them with clean water
  • Before eating or cooking
  1. Check Expiry Dates
  • Ask adults to check dates
  • Don’t eat expired food
  1. Don’t Eat Food from the Floor
  • If food falls, throw it away
  • Don’t pick it up and eat it
