Topic: Public Service In Democracy I

PUBLIC SERVICE

Public service is a service rendered by the government to the people living within its jurisdiction. They are responsible for the executions and implementation of government programmes and policies targeted towards a sector of society.

Some examples of public service in Nigeria include;

  1. Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN)
  2. Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board(JAMB)
  3. Niger Delta Development Commission(NDDC)
  4. Nigeria Deposit Insurance Company(NDIC)
  5. Nigerian Export Promotion Council
  6. National Open University of Nigeria(NOUN)
  7. Nigeria Customs Service(NCS)
  8. Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS)
  9. National Examination Council(NECO)
  10. Nigeria Television Authority(NTA) etc

CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC SERVICE

  1. It is owned by the state
  2. Its management and functioning are controlled by the state
  3. They owe accountability to the people as it is funded by public money
  4. It runs with utmost autonomy in some given situations
  5. They cut across all areas of life and society

 IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SERVICE

  1. it facilitates rural development
  2. it provides employment opportunities for many individuals
  3. It contributes to the national income
  4. it brings revenue to the government that can be used to sponsor projects
  5. it plays an important role in the development of infrastructure
  6. it contributes to export earnings
