Topic: Artificial Insemination
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to
- Define artificial insemination
- Identify and discuss various methods of Artificial insemination.
ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
Artificial insemination is a reproductive technique used in livestock breeding and sometimes in human fertility treatments. It involves the introduction of semen from a male into the reproductive tract of a female using techniques other than natural mating.
Methods of Artificial Insemination
The following are methods of artificial insemination:
- Artificial Vagina Method: In this method, the male animal is stimulated to ejaculate into an artificial vagina. The collected semen is then processed and inseminated into the female’s reproductive tract.
- Massage Method: This method involves manually stimulating the male’s genitalia to induce ejaculation. The semen is collected and processed before insemination into the female.
- Electro-Ejaculation: Electro-ejaculation is a technique used to collect semen from males who cannot ejaculate naturally. It involves the application of electrical stimulation to the nerves associated with ejaculation, leading to semen collection.
- Recovery of Semen from Vagina After Service: This method involves collecting semen from the female’s reproductive tract after natural mating or artificial insemination. The semen is recovered using specialised techniques and then processed for use in further inseminations or breeding programs.
EVALUATION:
- What is Artificial insemination (AI)
- Identify 4 methods of AI and describe them.
