NOTE
CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY
Constitutional democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people based on the supremacy of the Constitution. In constitutional democracy, the will of the people prevails especially if it is within the confines of the rule of law
FEATURES OF CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY
- popular sovereignty
- separated and shared powers
- Although the majority rules, the minority rights are protected
- The powers of the government are limited by the law
- The due process of law is followed and strictly obeyed
- Leadership succession is through elections
- Agencies/branches of government have adequate powers to check the powers of other branches
FUNCTIONS OF CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY
- It protects the citizens both from internal and external attacks
- they provide basic amenities for the people
- the rights and dignity of individuals are protected
- They promote national unity
