GRAMMAR: AFFIXATION

Prefixes As Word Extensions

Words can be grouped under various headings according to their forms, sounds, meanings and so on. One major source of word formation is known as affixation. An affix is a letter or a group of letters added to the beginning or the end of a word to change its meaning or the way it is used.

Affixation can occur in two forms, namely: prefix and suffix.

  1. Prefixes

A prefix is a letter or a group of letters placed before a root word to modify its meaning. A prefix added to a word usually does not change the word class( the part of speech) of the root word. E.g: dis-, out-, un-, non-, mis-, il-, im-, bi-, extra-, super-,mal-, fore-, poly-, mono-, under-,etc.

Knowing what a prefix means will help one understand the word to which the prefix is added.

For example

     Prefix      meaning         Example

  1. Anti-         against          anti-social
  2. Un-           not                unhappy
  3. Mono-     one               mono-tone
  4. Re-          back                return
  5. Bi-           two                bicycle

NOTE:

Some prefixes have negative implications. They are used to form the antonyms of the root word. For example:

Prefix         Word                Antonym

  1. Un-         Lawful            Unlawful
  2. Il-           legal                illegal
  3. Ir-          Regular           Irregular
  4. Im-       Possible         Impossible
  5. In-        Equality          Inequality
  6. Dis-     Advantage    Disadvantage
  7. Non-    Profit             Non-profit
