Topic: Hadith 10, 11, and 12 of An-Nawawi’s Collection

Hadith are the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims learn from these hadith to understand how to live as good Muslims. Imam An-Nawawi collected 40 important hadith that cover many parts of Islam. This lesson will study three of these hadith: the 10th, 11th, and 12th. These three hadith teach us about good deeds, being careful about what we do, and leaving things that do not concern us.

The 10th Hadith: Pure and Good Deeds

The Text of the Hadith

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Allah the Almighty is pure and accepts only what is pure. Allah has commanded the believers what He commanded the Messengers. Allah the Almighty has said: ‘O Messengers! Eat of the pure things and do righteous deeds.’ And Allah the Almighty has said: ‘O you who believe! Eat of the pure things We have provided you.'” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned a man who travels for a long time, his hair untidy and dusty, and he raises his hands to the sky, saying, “O Lord! O Lord!” while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he was nourished with what is unlawful, so how can his prayer be answered?

Explanation of the 10th Hadith

This hadith teaches us several important lessons:

  1. Allah is Pure: Allah is free from all defects and impurities. He is perfect in every way.
  2. Allah Accepts Only What is Pure: Our deeds, food, drinks, and earnings should all be pure and lawful (halal). Allah does not accept what comes from unlawful (haram) sources.
  3. The Same Rules for All: The rules that Allah gave to the Prophets are the same rules He gave to all believers. We must all follow these rules.
  4. Connection Between Food and Deeds: What we eat affects our spiritual life. If we eat from unlawful sources, our prayers may not be accepted.
  5. Importance of Lawful Earnings: We must make sure that our money comes from good and honest work. Money from stealing, cheating, or selling harmful things is not accepted by Allah.

Real-Life Application

This hadith reminds us to check everything we eat, drink, wear, and use. We should ask:

– Did I get this money through honest work?

– Is this food from a halal source?

– Am I spending my money on good things?

For example, a student should not cheat on tests, a worker should not lie about their hours, and a business owner should not sell harmful products. When we keep everything in our life pure, our prayers and good deeds are more likely to be accepted by Allah.

The 11th Hadith: Leave What Makes You Doubt

The Text of the Hadith

Abu Muhammad al-Hassan bin Ali, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), said: “I memorized from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): ‘Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.'”

Explanation of the 11th Hadith

This short hadith contains deep wisdom:

  1. Avoiding Doubt: We should stay away from anything that makes us feel unsure or uncomfortable because it might be wrong.
  2. Seeking Clarity: We should look for what is clear and certain in matters of religion and life.
  3. Peace of Mind: Following this advice brings peace to our hearts because we know we are doing what is right.
  4. Safety from Sin: By avoiding doubtful matters, we protect ourselves from accidentally falling into sin.
  5. Developing Taqwa (God-consciousness): This practice helps us become more aware of Allah in everything we do.

Real-Life Application

This hadith helps us make good decisions in daily life:

– If you’re not sure if a food contains pork or alcohol, it’s better to avoid it.

– If you’re unsure if a business deal involves interest (riba), it’s safer to find another opportunity.

– If you’re not certain if something you want to say is backbiting, it’s better to stay silent.

– If you’re unsure about information you heard, it’s better not to spread it until you verify it.

By following this hadith, we create a safety zone around ourselves that keeps us away from possible sins and mistakes.

The 12th Hadith: Leaving What Does Not Concern You

The Text of the Hadith

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Part of the excellence of a person’s Islam is that they leave what does not concern them.”

Explanation of the 12th Hadith

This hadith teaches us about focusing on what matters:

  1. Good Islamic Character: Leaving unnecessary things is a sign of being a good Muslim.
  2. Focusing on Priorities: We should spend our time and energy on important matters that benefit us in this life and the next.
  3. Avoiding Wasted Time: There are many distractions in life that have no benefit. A good Muslim avoids these.
  4. Respecting Others’ Privacy: We should not interfere in others’ affairs when it doesn’t involve us.
  5. Guarding the Tongue: This hadith encourages us to speak only when necessary and beneficial.

Real-Life Application

This hadith can guide us in many situations:

– Avoiding gossip and rumors about other people

– Not asking personal questions that invade others’ privacy

– Spending less time on meaningless entertainment

– Not getting involved in arguments that don’t concern us

– Using social media wisely and not sharing everything we see or hear

– Focusing on our own faults instead of pointing out others’ mistakes

By practicing this hadith, we save time and energy for worship and useful activities. We also maintain better relationships with others by respecting their privacy.

Connection Between These Three Hadith

These three hadith work together to help us live better lives:

– The 10th hadith teaches us to be careful about what enters our body and life (food, drink, income).

– The 11th hadith teaches us to be careful about our actions by avoiding doubtful matters.

– The 12th hadith teaches us to be careful about where we put our time and attention.

Together, they create a complete picture of how a Muslim should live: with pure sources, clear actions, and focused attention.

Conclusion

The 10th, 11th, and 12th hadith from An-Nawawi’s collection give us important guidance for daily life. They teach us to:

  1. Ensure everything in our life is pure and lawful
  2. Stay away from doubtful matters
  3. Focus only on what concerns us

By following these teachings, we can become better Muslims and find more peace in our lives. These hadith are short in words but deep in meaning and application. They help us make good choices in a world full of confusion and distractions.
