Topic: Oral: Falling Tone Statements

The falling tune is indicated with an arrow pointing in a downward direction (\). It is used to indicate when the pitch of the voice falls.

Its uses are:

  1. In statements: E.g:
  • John works hard in school. \
  • She got it right. \
  1. Giving commands. E.g:
  • Leave the door open.\
  • Close the door quickly \
  1. In exclamations: E.g:
  • Oh, my Lord! \
  • How awful! \
  1. In responding to yes or no questions: E.g:
  • Are they here? Yes \
  • Will they come? No \
  1. In asking wh questions: E.g:
  • Why are you not happy? \
  • What is your name? \
