Humility is a state of being humble meek, lowly and modest in everything one does and being unassuming Humility is one of the greatest attributes of a good Christian without humility one’s claim to be a Christian is not genuine.
The humility must be spontaneous genuine, taught and not sheer hypocrisy Paul and Peter taught this
PAUL PREACHING ON HUMILITY (PHIL2:1-11)
Paul in his epistle to Philippians stressed the need for humility among the church members when
Paul wrote the message there was disharmony among members of the Philippians because of pride. They reminded them that if their claim to be united with Christ was genuine they should purge themselves of selfishness and conceit and embrace humility they should not be self-centered.
Instead, they should consider the interest of others above their own according to Paul, humility breeds love as shown by Jesus Christ whose life was free from selfishness, personal ambition and prestige-seeking.
These virtues should be emulated by Christians. Paul used the eg of Jesus Christ.
He said Jesus was in the form of God but did not count himself equal to God the Father. He took the form of an ordinary servant and was born in the likeness of man.
Jesus humbled himself to the point of death even death on the cross was considered one of the two worst forms of death and God rewarded him by exalting him and giving him the name above all home.
WAYS OF DEMONSTRATING HUMILITY
- Obedience of supreme authority.
- Not boasting about one’s talent using them for serving God and our fellow men
- Feeling concerned about the needs of others
- Counting others better than ourselves 5. Obedience to our parents/elders
- Rendering selfless service to the society we belong to
- Purging ourselves of selfishness or conceit
- Forgiving those who might have offended us
- Ensuring peace and harmony in the society in which we belong
- Being law-abiding
- Showing love to one another
- Not being arrogant.
BENEFITS OF HUMILITY
- Humility promotes joyful Christian fellowship (Phil 2:1-2)
- Humility promises promotional exaltation from God in due time (1Pet5:6)
- Humility has the privilege of God’s grace (1Peter 5:8)
- Humility allows us to dump out anxieties on God for his precious refreshing returns (1 Pet 5:7)
- Humility makes for restoration and refreshing in and by God (1Pet 5:6-11)
- Humility keeps a check on our attitude, behaviour and actions as part of the fellowship of God’s Children.
- Humility helps us to appreciate more the worth of other people and constantly reminds us of our need for love and fellowship of others.
- Humility sharpens and improves our relationship not only with other Christians but with Christ and the God Head.
CONSEQUENCES OF PRIDE (JAMES 4:6-7)
- God opposes the proud.
- Pride leads to death.
- Pride is followed by scorn and ridicule.
- It destroyed land and people.
- It leads to lacks of lack of breakthroughs.
- It leads to despair.
- It leads to isolation and rejection.
