Surah Al-Fatihah is the first chapter of the Holy Quran. The word “Fatihah” means “The Opening” because it opens the Quran. This surah is also called:
– Umm Al-Kitab (The Mother of the Book)
– Umm Al-Quran (The Mother of the Quran)
– Al-Sab’ Al-Mathani (The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses)
– Al-Shafiyah (The Healer)
Surah Al-Fatihah has 7 verses and was revealed in Makkah. It is so important that Muslims recite it in every prayer (salah). A prayer is not complete without reciting Surah Al-Fatihah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah).”
The Arabic Text and Translation
Here is Surah Al-Fatihah in Arabic and its simple English meaning:
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”
- الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
“The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
- مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
“Master of the Day of Judgment.”
- إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.”
- اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
“Guide us to the straight path.”
- صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ
“The path of those whom You have favored, not of those who earned Your anger or those who went astray.”
Understanding Each Verse
Verse 1: Beginning with Allah’s Name
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
This verse is called the Bismillah. Muslims say it before starting any good action. It means we are starting our action with Allah’s name and seeking His blessing. The words “Rahman” and “Rahim” both come from the Arabic word for mercy (rahmah). “Rahman” means Allah’s mercy covers everything in creation. “Rahim” means His special mercy for believers.
Verse 2: Praising Allah
“All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”
This verse teaches us to praise and thank Allah for everything. The word “Rabb” (Lord) means Allah is the Creator, Owner, and Caretaker of all worlds. “Worlds” includes everything: humans, animals, plants, angels, jinn, and all other creatures we know and don’t know.
Verse 3: Allah’s Mercy
“The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
This verse repeats Allah’s qualities of mercy to remind us how merciful He is. Allah’s mercy is mentioned twice in the beginning of the surah to show how important this quality is.
Verse 4: The Day of Judgment
“Master of the Day of Judgment.”
This verse reminds us that Allah is the only judge on the Day of Judgment. On that day, everyone will be judged for what they did in this life. Good people will go to Paradise, and bad people will be punished. This verse helps us remember to do good deeds and avoid bad ones.
Verse 5: Worship and Help
“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.”
This verse teaches us two important things:
- We should worship only Allah and no one else
- We should ask only Allah for help with everything
It’s important to note that in this verse, “You alone” comes before the verbs. This shows that worship and seeking help are only for Allah, not for anyone or anything else.
Verse 6: Asking for Guidance
“Guide us to the straight path.”
After praising Allah and declaring our worship, we ask Him for guidance. The “straight path” means the right way of living that leads to Paradise. This is the most important thing to ask for because without guidance, we cannot know how to live properly.
Verse 7: The Right and Wrong Paths
“The path of those whom You have favored, not of those who earned Your anger or those who went astray.”
This verse explains what the straight path is. It is the path of:
– People Allah has favored (prophets, truthful people, martyrs, and righteous people)
– Not people who earned Allah’s anger (those who knew the truth but rejected it)
– Not people who went astray (those who follow wrong beliefs out of ignorance)
Special Features of Surah Al-Fatihah
A Complete Prayer
Surah Al-Fatihah is a complete prayer that contains:
– Praise of Allah
– Declaration of faith
– Request for guidance
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Allah says: “I have divided the prayer (Al-Fatihah) into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.”
When we say:
– “All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all worlds” – Allah says: “My servant has praised Me.”
– “The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” – Allah says: “My servant has glorified Me.”
– “Master of the Day of Judgment” – Allah says: “My servant has honored Me.”
– “You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help” – Allah says: “This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will have what he has asked for.”
– “Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom You have favored, not of those who earned Your anger or those who went astray” – Allah says: “This is for My servant, and My servant will have what he has asked for.”
Conversation with Allah
Surah Al-Fatihah is unique because it is a direct conversation with Allah. In the first three verses, we talk about Allah. In the middle verse, we talk to Allah. In the last three verses, we ask Allah for what we need most: guidance.
Healing Power
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called Surah Al-Fatihah “Al-Shafiyah,” which means “The Healer.” There are stories of companions using this surah to heal sick people. The surah can heal spiritual sickness (like doubt or sadness) and can also be recited as a prayer for physical healing.
