EFFECTS OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS

1. Poverty – Poverty, whether material or mental, is a drawback to the individual and his society. 

The following are the hard and bad effects of poverty: 

1. Poor quality of life 
2. Lack of access to education 
3. Violence 
4. Poverty is also caused by not taking the right type of education. 

2. Underdevelopment refers to an economy that lacks the human and material resources needed to improve the quality of human lives which leads to low levels of living characterized by low real income per capita, illiteracy, poverty, overpopulation, and disease. 

These are some of the attributes of underdevelopment: 

1. High dependency on agriculture 
2. Heavy dependency on foreign nations 
3. Little savings and investments 
4. Over-population 
5. Low standard of living 
6. Absence of adequate medical facilities 
7. High death rate 
8. Poor infrastructural development 
9. Absence of heavy industries 
10. High level of illiteracy 
11. Malnutrition 
12. Use of crude technology 
13. Deplorable life expectancy

  3.Corruption as a social problem is: 

1. Corruption retards the economic, political, and social growth of the country. The quality of life, goods, and services are inferior. 
2. It destroys honest efforts – Merit, hard work, and honesty are relegated to the background, while cheating is copied as a way of life 
3. Corruption sends dangerous signals to genuine investors. Since corruption become institutionalized in Nigeria, Investors fear coming to invest in Nigeria. They see Nigeria as unsafe and fear to come. 
4. Corruption leads to the total inefficiency of public institutions in Nigeria. e. A fallen standard in education is the handiwork of corruption. The display of ill-gotten money in funerals, launching ceremonies, party rallies, and electioneering campaigns, affects grossly, and negatively impacts the children who are in education whether at the primary, secondary, or university levels. 
5. Corruption causes unemployment. Corrupt practices of the yesteryears are responsible for the flight of public funds that could have been gainfully utilized to be diverted into private use and the like. Unemployment is at its highest level in the country. Few people cart away all their money while others watch them move into great wealth and remain unemployed. Corruption must stop in our time, for us to invest wisely and enjoy meaningful existence from God etc. 
    SOLUTIONS OR MEASURES OF SOLVING CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN NIGERIA

Once there is a problem, there must be a way out. To solve the contemporary social problems in Nigeria, all hands must be on deck. 

1. The government – The government should create jobs for our teaming youth population or find a way of empowering and encouraging them to be self-reliant, skill acquisition centers should be established in major towns of the country so that the youths can learn one skill or the other. 
2. The government should introduce policies that encourage value re-orientation clubs in our schools. 
3. The civil society groups should also help in the prevention of social problems with the following: 
4. Ethnicity 
5. Parental care and attention 
6. Religious leaders/parents to give good moral lessons/messages. 
7. Creating enlightenment programs or conferences. 
8. Personal discipline – To be disciplined is to refuse to engage in any practice that is not acceptable. When one is disciplined, he is respectful, upright, morally sound, honest, truthful, etc. Discipline as a value should be inculcated from home to the child for him or her to grow up with.
