Topic: Production Of Cosmetics

COSMETICS AND DEODORANTS

Cosmetics are make-ups or substances applied on the body, mainly on the face to improve the body’s natural features.

Deodorants are substances applied on the skin to prevent or control body odour when a person sweats. Deodorants come in the form of ‘roll-on’, spray, or sticks, with different types of fragrances or perfumes.

IMPORTANCE OF COSMETICS AND DEODORANTS

  1. They are used to improve natural features
  2. They can be used to hide a person’s poor feature
  3. Some make-ups can be used as treatment for skin problems such as pimples
  4. When properly used, they can make one look more attractive
  5. Some make-up can help protect the skin.

The following are various types of cosmetics

  1. Assorted types of  body creams
  2. Nail polish and varnish
  3. Perfumes and deodorants
  4. Hair make-ups
  5. Face make-ups, such as:

Powders that come in  colours and textures

  1. Eyeliners
  2. Eye shadow
  3. Mascara
  4. Eyebrow liner
  5. Rouge applied lightly on the cheek
  6. Lipstick and lip liner.

We also have indigenous cosmetics. Indigenous cosmetics are simple preparations containing natural ingredients that are used by women to make them look more beautiful. They are often obtained from leaves, roots, soil, bark of trees, herbs, and shrubs.

TYPES OF INDIGENOUS COSMETICS

  1. Eye make-up “Tiro”: it is applied as eyeliner using a special thin stick reserved for the purpose
  2. Camwood powder ; “uhe”(Igbo) or “oshun”(Yoruba)”
  3. Body paint “uri”(Igbo)
  4. “Lali”or “Lalle”
  5. “Nzu”(Igbo) or “efun”(Yoruba)

TOOLS FOR MAKING POMADE:

Saucepan, mixing spoon, Bottle, or plastic pomade containers

RECIPE FOR MAKING POMADE

2 cups of petroleum jelly, ¾ cup of mineral oil, 1 mineral wax for thickening, 1 tablespoon of lanolin, Colour (as desired), and Perfume (as desired).

Evaluation:

1.  Differentiate between Indigenous and modern cosmetics

2.  State five effects of bleaching cream on the skin

Assignment:

Outline the procedures for making pomade.
