AFFIXATION: SUFFIXES

This refers to the addition of prefixes, suffixes and infixes to words leading to new words, meanings and word classes.

Examples 

  1. Verbs

i. verbs+  –ment e.g.

Enslavement, achievement 

Management, movement 

Development 

ii. verbs + –ion e.g. 

Action 

Conclusion 

Decision 

iii. verbs +  –ation. E.g:

organise = organisation 

document = documentation 

mobilize = mobilization 

iv  verb + –age. Eg:

marry = marriage 

drain = drainage 

carry = carriage 

v. verb +  –ist. E.g:

type = typist 

separate = separatist 

vi. verb +  –er / -or. E.g:

teach = teacher

debate = debater

direct = director 

oppress = oppressor 

vii. verb + –ee. E.g:

amputate = amputee

employ = employee

invite = invitee

viii. verbs + –ve, ant, -ing. Eg:

correct = corrective

cure = curative

attend = attendant 

appeal = appellant 

clone = cloning 

house = housing 

ix. verbs + –ry, ery/ ary. E.g:

brew =brewery 

refine = refinery

cook = cookery

dispense = dispensary

 

  1. Adjectives

i. Adjectives + –ness. Eg:

useful = usefulness

useless = uselessness 

dry = dryness 

conscious = consciousness 

responsive = responsible 

sad = sadness 

ill = illness

ii. adjective + –ity, hood, -ance/ -ence. E.g:

ethnic – ethnicity 

public – publicity 

false – falsehood 

important = importance

different = difference 

 iii. Adjectives + –ancy, / -ency. Eg:

flippant – flippancy 

efficient – efficiency
