LISTENING COMPREHENSION: LISTENING FOR SUMMARY THROUGH IDENTIFYING KEYWORDS

Meaning Of Listening For Summary.

Listening for summary means the ability for one to listen attentively to a given passage to grasp the important information presented such as the topic sentence and the main idea.

Identification Of Key Words From A Passage.  

The keywords are those words that relate to the main point. To identify the keywords from the passage, the reader has to look out for the important words from the paragraphs.  

Identification Of Key Sentences From A Passage.

The key sentences are those sentences that relate to the main point. They are also the sentences that open the paragraphs (Mostly, it comes in the beginning). It relates to the topic of the paragraph, therefore it is also called the topic sentence. It is written in such a way that it increases the anxiety of the reader to read further sentences till the end.

ASSIGNMENT

Read pages 188 and 189 of New Concept English for Senior Secondary Schools book 1 and answer the following questions.

 

  1. Write three key sentences from the passage.
  2. Summarize in three sentences what you understand from the passage.
  3. In two sentences, explain what an ordeal is.

CONTINUOUS WRITING: SPEECH WRITING 

Speech writing is the process of writing a speech that is intended to be delivered to an audience. Speeches typically have a clear purpose, such as to inform, persuade, or entertain.

Speeches should be well-organized and easy to follow. The language in a speech should be clear, concise, and engaging. Speeches should be delivered in a way that is confident and persuasive

Features Of Speech Writing

  1. Clarity: Speeches should be clear and easy to understand. The language should be simple, and the ideas should be presented in a logical order.
  2. Conciseness: Speeches should be concise and to the point. The speaker should avoid rambling or going off on tangents.
  3. Engagement: Speeches should be engaging and interesting to the audience. The speaker should use humour, anecdotes, and other techniques to keep the audience’s attention.
  1. Persuasion: Speeches that are intended to persuade should be well-argued and convincing. The speaker should use evidence and logic to support their points.
  1. Delivery: The delivery of a speech is just as important as the content. The speaker should speak clearly and confidently, and they should make eye contact with the audience.

Common Mistakes To Avoid During Speech Writing

  1. Using outdated expressions or overly used ones. This will make your speech sound stale and boring.
  2. Using jargon or technical terms that your audience may not understand.If you must use jargon, be sure to explain it in plain language.
  3. Being too wordy. Get to the point and avoid rambling.
  4. Using passive voice. Active voice is more engaging and persuasive.
  5. Making claims that you can’t support. Be sure to have evidence to back up your assertions.
  6. Being too pessimistic. People are more likely to be persuaded by positive messages.
  7. Being too self-promotional. Focus on the message, not yourself.
  8. Reading your speech from a script. This will make you sound robotic and unengaged.
  9. Not practising your speech enough. This will lead to mistakes and make you look unprepared.
